Two sets of rules

The platform and the City.

Toronto drivers deal with two separate requirements.

If you drive for a rideshare company in Toronto, two organizations have rules you need to meet:

These rules are not identical, and they are updated from time to time. This guide summarizes what each one said when we checked in October 2026, so you know what to ask before paying for anything.

Uber in Toronto

What Uber asks for.

From Uber's Toronto driver sign-up page.

An annual background screening

Uber says Toronto drivers must pass a background screening that includes a review of your driving record and criminal history, and that it must be repeated every calendar year.

Two ways to complete it

The 30-day rule

Uber says self-supplied documents must be submitted within 30 days of the document’s issue date. Order your CRJMC only when you are ready to submit it.

Lyft and other platforms

Other platforms set their own screening process and timing. Check the current driver requirements in your platform’s app or help centre before ordering a check yourself.

City of Toronto

What the City lists.

For drivers licensed by the City of Toronto.

The City of Toronto page for taxicab, limousine and vehicle-for-hire driver licences lists a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check among the required documents, with a note that it is valid for one year from the search date. The page also notes that digital copies are not accepted for in-person applications, and it sets out screening criteria under which the City can deny a licence for certain convictions.

The City page did not say, when we checked, which issuers it accepts. City reports and requirements have changed over time, so confirm the current freshness rule and accepted issuer directly with the City of Toronto before you order.

What a CRJMC shows

A CRJMC includes applicable criminal convictions and certain youth findings of guilt, plus absolute and conditional discharges, outstanding charges, arrest warrants and certain judicial orders. A Basic criminal record check shows convictions only and does not meet a CRJMC requirement. Learn more in CRJMC online: what it is and who needs it.

Before you order

Is an online CRJMC right for you?

Order only after you have confirmed it will be accepted.

  1. Check your platform first. If your platform runs the screening for you, you may not need to buy a check at all.
  2. Confirm the issuer. Ask your platform, or the City if you are applying for a City licence, whether a CRJMC from an authorized online provider is accepted.
  3. Mind the window. Uber asks for submission within 30 days of issue; the City lists one year from the search date. Order close to when you will submit.
  4. Keep the file intact. Upload or present the document exactly as you received it. Add the embossed certificate (+$9.00) if you need a paper original.

If your platform or the City accepts an online CRJMC, our Enhanced CRJMC is $51 plus tax, ordered online with no appointment. Most results are emailed within minutes.
